The endorsement in Culturally and Linguistic Diverse Education (CLDE) is intended for those who have a teaching license and want to teach in an English Language Learner classroom. This endorsement provides content and application to foster the skills needed to support English language learners and their academic achievement. The CLDE endorsement is awarded to candidates by the Colorado Department of Education upon the recommendation of Colorado Christian University.

Objectives of the Endorsement in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education

  • Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education (CLDE) endorsement candidates evaluate how Scripture is reflected in the theories, concepts, principles, and practices of their academic discipline.

  • CLDE endorsement candidates demonstrate a body of knowledge and skills in depth and breadth as defined by the State of Colorado CLDE and TESOL standards.

    • CLDE endorsement candidates survey theories and research relevant to the teaching and learning of English as a second/foreign language that has been established as effective.

    • CLDE candidates plan, implement, and modify appropriate instructional strategies to meet the learning needs of English language learners.

    • CLDE candidates apply evidence-based solutions to second language learners.

    • CLDE candidates incorporate original research with the established body of knowledge in CLDE and TESOL to develop and apply a personal, Christian Philosophy of Education.

    • CLDE candidates develop lessons focusing on critical linguistic structures to support second language instructions (e.g., syntax, morphology, and context).

  • CLDE candidates use critical thinking skills to critique issues and provide solutions in a particular content area or discipline.

  • CLDE candidates demonstrate proficiency in their academic writing.

  • CLDE candidates demonstrate information literacy according to the norms of their profession and evaluate information from multiple sources, drawing conclusions from research gathered.

  • CLDE candidates reflect on the impact of new learning, an integration of a biblical worldview, and evaluate the changes that occurred to assumptions, and in their personal and professional lives.

  • CLDE candidates apply a proficient body of new knowledge and skills synthesized with prior knowledge and skills to serve and influence their workplaces, families, and communities.

    • CLDE candidates collaborate with families and community members to positively impact language acquisition.

    • CLDE candidates demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the relationship of cultural identity and heritage to English language learning.

Admission to the Endorsement in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education Program

Admission to the Endorsement in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education program is selective. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of previous academic performance, personal and professional accomplishments and goals, and strength of professional disposition qualities. Each applicant is carefully evaluated for his or her ability to contribute to the program. A strong desire to complete graduate-level work in a Christ-centered, biblically based community is important.

Admission Requirements

  • A completed application form (including essay, transcripts, and fees)

  • Valid state-issued driver's license or state-issued ID card or passport

  • An official transcript that reflects a bachelor's or master's degree from a regionally accredited institution

  • One professional recommendation from an individual who is not a family member

  • Personal interview

  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae

  • A minimum undergraduate grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants with an undergraduate grade point average between 2.0 and 2.49 will be admitted on a conditional admit (CAD) basis for the first semester. CAD students must maintain a 3.0 GPA or better in their first nine (9) credits to remain in the program.

  • Completed background check (Required for program admission in order to complete field requirements.)

Academic Requirements

Students must earn a C or higher in each graduate education course. Students with a desire to obtain the program will be required to obtain a 3.0 or higher GPA to graduate from that program.
